Dwayne,
We have concluded that it would be prudent to move some trout as soon
as possible, as the rains are here. Your team basically concluded with
our earlier assessment there exists a real probability that the ash and bare
soils could be washed into the stream resulting in heavily silted pools thus
killing any trout. Even in pools on Doane Creek where the ash had entered
site specific pools, we could see no evidence of trout. In pools that had
not had an ash experience there were small trout.
Our recommendations are to place at least 50 to 100 rt from middle Pauma
up into upper French Creek where the fire did not burn, and to capture an
additional 20 individuals to be transferred to the Chula Vista Nature
Center. Leave the ones in Doane Creek where they are living.
Maybe a net across the stream to keep them from roaming downstream until the
rains subside in March would also be of help.
I hope you agree with our conclusions. and that we can accomplish these
tasks right away. Allen Greenwood
